OEM & Spare Parts

Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) is a company that produces parts and equipment that may be marketed by another manufacturer. OEM also means the maker of an automotive part that is manufactured by the same company that produced the original part used in the automobile's assembly. For example, if Acme Manufacturing Co. makes power cords that are used on IBM computers, Acme is an OEM.

BMW outsources many of the auto parts needed to manufacture its vehicle to OEMs. It depends upon a network of over 100 auto parts suppliers, although approximately 50% of its suppliers are either located in Germany or are subsidiaries of German-based companies. Some examples include:

  • BorgWarner: Drivetrain components, such as clutches and automatic transmissions
  • Mahle: Piston and cylinder components, valve train systems, and air and liquid management systems
  • Delphi: Battery and electric vehicle charger components

Check out our Brands and Products Page to see what OEM parts we carry.

Aftermarket parts are parts made by private manufacturers to provide alternate replacement of OEM (original equipment manufacturer) parts. They are generally less expensive, with more variaties and more variety of quality and availability.

OEM parts should work exactly as the one you are replacing. It is what the vehicle was manufactured with and provides a peace of mind in its familiarity and performance.

A Genuine part is a part that is originally put in your vehicle when it was new and has the car manufacturer's logo on it. This does not mean the product is actually made by the car manufacturer, it is often times made by a different company but the car manufacturer's logo is added.

Buying an OEM part means removing the car manufacturer from the supply chain network, thus minimizing the supply chain costs. OEMs also rely on their ability to drive down the cost of production through economies of scale.

An OEM part is built by the same company that built the original product for the car maker. It is the same part that is in your car, except it does not have the car maker's logo.

Spare parts are interchangeable parts that are used for the repair or replacement of worn and damaged units.

Accessories are parts made for comfort, convenience, performance, safety, or customization, and are designed for add-on after the original sale of the motor vehicle.

Certain items are not sold by OEMs either due to lack of demand, contract obligations with car manufacturers or it is produced by the car manufacturer itself. Some examples include items with car manufacturer’s logo (emblem/carpet), certain body parts(doors/bonnet/bodykits), and spare parts for new vehicle models.

Choosing between OEM, aftermarket or genuine is up to the discretion of the buyer. We will offer as many options as we can to give customers the flexibility to choose.

As a general guideline, we recommend purchasing genuine parts for new vehicles, OEM parts for relatively older cars, and aftermarket replacement parts for vehicles that are more than 10-15 years old. Our salesmen will also give case-by-case advice for customers who are in doubt.

Sport Line is a basic trim package that is common in newer BMW models (F series onwards), along with other trim packages such as Luxury Line and Modern Line.

M-Sport is a premium trim package that is even more aggressive than the Sport Line. It includes ‘M’ badges dotted about the car, more aggressive body kits, larger wheels, lower suspensions, gloss black exterior trims, sportier seats and steering wheels etc.

M-Performance is a set of accessories which have been inspired by decades of BMW motorsport success. It consists of many carbon fiber trims such as front splitters, side mirrors, rear diffusers, side apron extenders and boot spoilers. There are also M-Performance power kits, spring sets and muffler systems.

M is a series that uses the same base platform but is built ground up to be a sports car. It looks much sportier, is wider, lower, handles better and is faster than non-M BMW's. Most parts for an M are developed and fine tuned by BMW’s Motorsport division. An M car is also considerably more expensive.

BMW commonly releases premium models of its more popular production cars. While there are some models that are outliers, such as the CSi and the GTS, most series will conform to the list below.

The image shows the hierachy of current and upcoming BMW models, with the M CSL models sitting at the top. It's labeled as "Born for the racetrack", meaning CSL models will not concern themselves with the everyday suitability nature that the CS models feature, but can instead be completely track focused.

BMW car owners looking to 'upgrade' their vehicles to different model variances can look for us for both retrofitting and conversion parts.
